Screen Printing

  • Wednesday, July 9 from 7-9 pm;
    Saturday, July 12 from 1-5 pm
  • Cost: $85 + $15 materials fee

Preparing Your Design

  • What works, what doesn’t
  • Multicolor workflow
  • Film positive or ruby lith output
  • Choosing the right screen: screen size, mesh count

Preparing Your Screen

  • Coat back of screen with photo emulsion, allow to dry
  • Expose film positive onto screen
  • Rinse out screen to reveal your stencil

A Few Last Things Before Printing…

  • Protect the ends of the screen with strips of packaging tape
  • Positioning the screen onto the press
  • Registration

Let’s Start Printing!

  • Test prints onto newsprint
  • How fast should I print?
  • Ink Management
    • How much ink to add and pull with each stroke
    • Squeegee angles (30 vs. 45 degrees)
    • Use palette knife to redirect excess ink
  • Multiple passes build up ink density
  • Trouble-shooting clogged screens

Dry and Store Your Prints

  • Heat vs. flash drying fresh prints
  • Paper vs. textiles

Cleaning Up

  • Degreasing your screen
  • Rinsing out the stencil and squeegee
  • Screen storage
