Claire Light Book Launch Party
by admin on Jan.22, 2010, under Book Arts, Letterpress
Local writer Claire Light is celebrating the launch of her new book, Slightly Behind and to the Left, with an upcoming launch party! There will be performances by Jaime Cortez, Sadie Contini, Lise Swenson, and others as well.
For this project, Claire collaborated with Patricia Wakida of Wasabi Press, who letterpress printed a limited number of book jackets onto recycled grocery shopping bags for a vintage wartime era look.
According to Patricia, the cover depicts a Japanese-American teenage boy who lives on a strawberry farm during World War II and believes he was abducted by aliens; the “planets” he visits with the aliens are scrambled names of Japanese internment camps.
We’ve been great fans of Patricia’s work (check out her cool tiger postcards). As usual, we love supporting local writers and book artists (especially when they work together), and encourage you to stop by.
SLIGHTLY BEHIND AND TO THE LEFT book launch party!
Date: Tuesday, February 23, 2010
Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Location: Socha Cafe

Fresh Off the Press: 100th Anniversary Vandercook Model
by admin on Oct.07, 2009, under Book Arts, Letterpress, Printing
Here are some photos from the 100th Anniversary Vandercook Model project, which we recently completed. It was printed on Strathmore Writing Wove, Bright White, 110 lb. paper as a 3-color offset (including a slick metallic PMS 877 silver), followed by a letterpress pass to reinforce the scores and outlines. Finally, we die-cut the various model shapes so they pop out for easy construction!
Kudos to everyone who has donated their time, energy and resources into making this little model possible! We’d especially like to thank:
- Shirley Edwards for the model design
- Pacific Center for the Book Arts for publishing the model
- Fritz Klinke of NA Graphics for his permission to use the Vandercook logo
- Book Club of California, who is making the model as a keepsake for their members
- The American Printing History Association and the Gleeson Library of the University of San Francisco for their support throughout the project
More Vandercook model photos are available here.
